Children's author, Ben Mikaelsen, to speak at Wellington Elementary
Ben Mikaelsen, children's author of "Rescue Josh McGuire," "Sparrow Hawk Red," and his just-released book, "Touching Spirit Bear" will present "Creation of a Book" to adults from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at the Wellington Elementary gymnasium. This is a free presentation and book-signing event open to all area parents and educators.
Mikaelsen will discuss the challenges faced in creating his books. A slide presentation allows a view inside his research as he tries to uncover the emotions that bring the soul to each story. These experiences include raising a 650-pound black bear, living with the homeless, working with dolphins, attending space camp, going undercover with drug enforcement agents and living with the Maasai in Africa.
During the week of May 29 through June 1, Mikaelsen is giving age-specific presentations to students at Wellington and Kokanee elementaries in Woodinville, Fernwood Elementary and Northshore Junior High in Bothell, Kenmore Elementary and Monroe Middle School. Mikaelsen is winner of the International Reading Association Award and the Western Writer's Golden Spur Award.
His novels have won many Reader's Choice awards. He and his wife live in a log cabin near Bozeman, Mont., with a 650-pound black bear they adopted and raised for the last 17 years.
Wellington Elementary is located at 16501 NE 195th Street, Woodinville.
