Auction of Washington Wines
Pre-event picnic raised money for new wine education program
Each year there is an activity prior to the event.
This year was the first year for the event to be a picnic on the grounds of Chateau Ste. Michelle. Planned for a sunny Thursday, Aug. 23, event personnel quickly had to shift inside to the large new barrel room due to the heavy rains all last week. Picnic guests were handed a fleece blanket and decorative pail full of dessert items, gifts and glasses. Wines from 40 Washington wineries were featured. Pigs were roasted and guests dined on a gourmet buffet of salmon and pork.
The picnic featured a silent and live auction that benefited the new Washington Wine Education Program, a viticulture and enology program developed at Washington State University and participating community colleges in Washington.
Women in Washington wine were honored. Winemakers were on hand to answer questions about their wine.
