Lions host salmon barbecue

*The 34th annual salmon barbecue, hosted by the Lions Club, will be held Sunday, Sept. 9, from noon to 6 p.m at the Mountain View Community Hall, 19008 168th Ave. NE.

Spider search planned

*Join a King County Park System naturalist and spider enthusiast,on an outing to unravel the web of mystery surrounding these amazing arachnids on Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Tolt MacDonald Memorial Park in Carnation.

*The Puyallup Fair is kicking off its second hundred years Friday, Sept. 7, at the fairgrounds, 110 Ninth Ave. SW in Puyallup.
  

Engagement: Henderson - Woodside

* Wendy Henderson of Redmond and Mark Woodside of Woodinville have announced their plans for a Sept. 29 wedding at Fort Worden State Park in the old Army blimp hangar, now called the McCurdy Pavillion. The couple had their first date a year ago at that site.
  

Obituary: Vera Lee Shelts

* Vera Shelts died Aug. 28 at her home in Woodinville of natural causes. She was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Fayetteville, Ark., and married Phillip L. Shelts on Dec. 24, 1932, in Battle Creek, Mich. He preceeded her in death in 1979.
  

YMCA offers child-care programs

*The Northshore YMCA provides licensed, preschool child-care programs. The center has a new playground that includes a colorful climber, rider toys, sandbox, easel and more.

*A pancake breakfast, a fun run and a tap dancing group with members ranging into their 80s are just some of the innovations set for this year's Kenmore Good Ol' Days Festival and Parade to take place on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Kenmore Village, with free parking in the Park & Ride lot to the north.
