Civics Academy provides insight into city government

WOODINVILLE - Continuing education has a new meaning for Woodinville. The city is hosting a Civics Academy geared to teaching citizens and students about local government and encouraging participation in various city planning processes.
The following free workshops will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, Woodinville City Hall, 17301 133rd Avenue NE:
Thursday, Sept. 20, Woodinville Government 101
   Thursday, Sept. 27, Budget Basics
Thursday, Oct. 4, Decision Making: Land Use Planning and Capital Projects
The Government 101 workshop will provide an overview of roles and responsibilities of the City Council, volunteer advisory commissions and key city staff.
In the Budget Basics session, participants will gain an understanding of revenues that support city services and how the city's annual budget is developed. Students will be asked to balance a (mock) budget based upon revenue sources and operating expenditures.
Participants in the Land Use Planning and Capital Projects workshop will gain insight on how public comment influences development projects such as a new subdivision, a park or road improvement project. A case scenario will be presented depicting the decision-making process.
These workshops are a great opportunity for Woodinville community service organizations, students, homeowners and business representatives to complete a refresher course in civics.
