Cost Plus opens new store in Woodinville

by Deborah Stone
Cost Plus World Market recently celebrated the grand opening of its Woodinville store, marking the retailer's sixth store in the Seattle area.
The store, known for its spirited and eclectic approach to retail, has approximately 18,000 square feet filled with an array of home decor items, casual furnishings, tabletop accessories, decorative gifts and gourmet foods and beverages, all imported from countries around the world.
Founded in 1958 when a San Francisco businessman blended his passion for travel and retailing by selling shiploads of imported wicker he found during his trips through Asia, the company has grown to 143 stores in nineteen states.
With its international flavor, great variety and competitive prices, Cost Plus has developed a recipe for success that has allowed the company to continue its expansion across the country. It carefully reviews local demographic data to select new locations for its stores, focusing on key factors including a well educated population, strong numbers of homeowners with household incomes above $50,000 and a high number of women, 25 to 55 years old.
Buyers for the company search the world visiting remote villages, old, established factories and covered bazaars for unusual products to bring home to display in the stores. Some of these unique items include baskets from Indonesia, chocolates from Belgium, pottery from Italy, handcrafted iron candlesticks from India, masks from Ghana and recycled wood furniture from Indonesia, along with eighteen varieties of olive oil and 500 different wines.
The Woodinville location has already attracted hoards of shoppers who had been eagerly awaiting the opening of the store, after watching its construction during the past year.
"We have had a great response since opening," comments Sarah Mohrmann, the store's assistant manager. "The parking lot has been full and the place has been really busy. People seem really glad that we're here. I think it was a smart move to open a store in this area and I know it will do well."
According to Mohrmann, the most popular items are the baskets and the various ethnic foods.
Mohrmann encourages the community to stop by and check out the new store. She says, "Once people come in, they find it hard to leave because it's such a fun place to wander around in with so much to look at. It's a colorful environment and our staff is very friendly."
