Washington Mutual awards grants to Northshore
The Washington Mutual Foundation has awardeda grant totaling $3,500 to the Northshore Public Education Foundation, in support of the Northshore School District's training for the Developing Mathematical Ideas program.
Developing Mathematical Ideas is a curriculum designed to help teachers think through the major ideas of K-12 mathematics and examine how children develop those ideas. In addition to case discussions, the curriculum offers teachers opportunities to explore mathematics in lessons led by facilitators; to share and discuss the work of their own students; to plan, conduct and analyze mathematics interviews of their own students; to view and discuss videotapes of mathematics classrooms and mathematics interviews; to write their own classroom episodes, to analyze lessons taken from innovative elementary mathematics curricula; and to read overviews of related research.
The grant money will help to provide casebooks for 175 teachers. The Northshore Public Education Foundation was established in 1995 to provide supplemental resources to teachers in the Northshore School District.
