Washington cigarette tax in effect
As of Jan. 1, 2002, the cigarette tax in Washington state increased 60 cents per pack. This increase was approved by the voters of the state with the passage of Initiative 773 last November.
Tax revenue from each pack of cigarette sales is distributed by law into four funds:
€ 8 cents for water quality
€ 10 1/2 cents for programs to stop youth violence
€ 23 cents for the state general fund
€ $1.01 for health care
The possession of untaxed cigarettes in Washington State is either a gross misdemeanor (60,000 or fewer cigarettes) or a class C felony (over 60,000 cigarettes). The only exemptions allowed by law are active duty and retired military personnel and enrolled members of Native American Tribes.
