Bothell City Council elects mayor, mayor pro tempore

BOTHELL - At its first regular meeting of 2002 on Jan. 7, the Bothell City Council elected Bob Bandarra as the City of Bothell mayor and Jeff Merrill as mayor pro tempore. The term for these positions is two years ending on Dec. 31, 2003.
   "The City of Bothell looks forward to working with the new City Council," said City Manager Jim Thompson. "The city's leadership is the key to the community's success and I'm confident we will continue to provide the highest levels of public service."
   Bandarra's local government experience includes membership on the Bothell City Council since 1999 and a former member of the City of Bothell Shorelines Board. He is the general manager of the Woodinville Water District.
   Pursuant to RCW 35A.13.030, the Bothell City Council Mayor is considered the chairman of the council and shall have the title of mayor; and
   shall preside at meetings of the council;
   in addition to the powers conferred to him as mayor, shall continue to have all the rights, privileges and immunities of a council member;
   shall be recognized as the head of the city for ceremonial purposes and by the governor for purposes of military law;
   shall have no administrative duties, but in time of public danger or emergency, if so authorized by ordinance, shall take command of the police, maintain order and enforce law.
   Mayor Pro Tempore Jeff Merrill's local government experience includes Bothell City Council membership since 1994. He is a Washington State Patrol trooper.
   His duties as mayor pro tempore require him to serve in the absence or temporary disability of the mayor.
   All Bothell City Council positions are four-year terms. Council member positions are non-partisan, part-time and stipend positions; stipends in accordance with Bothell Municipal Code 2.12.050, which states:
   All council members elected or appointed to terms commencing on or after Jan. 1, 1993, and prior to Jan. 1, 1998, shall receive a salary of $250 per month.
   All council members elected or appointed to terms commencing on or after Jan. 1, 1998, shall receive a salary of $500 per month.
   Any council member elected to serve as mayor commencing on or after Jan. 1, 1993, and prior to Jan. 1, 1998, shall receive a salary of $500 per month.
   Any council member elected to serve as mayor commencing on or after Jan. 1, 1998, shall receive a salary of $700 per month.
