Student wins National Security Education scholarship
Alison Hannah, a junior diplomacy and world affairs major at Occidental College in Los Angeles, has been awarded a $4,000 David L. Boren Scholarship to study Russian grammar, phonetics and ancient history in Moscow. Hannah, a Redmond High School graduate, will be in Russia during the 2002 fall semester through a program administered by Vermont's Middlebury College.
"What is more important than academics, however, is the knowledge that I will gain about Russian culture and society," Hannah said. "Too many tragic events are the result of ignorance and misunderstanding, and I hope to prevent these instances through the knowledge that I acquire abroad."
Hannah plans to eventually enter graduate school to study law or some aspect of international relations.
