'Bothell Beautiful' awards
The recipients of the third annual "Bothell Beautiful" awards were announced at a June 17 Bothell City Council meeting. Created from a suggestion by a local businessman, "Bothell Beautiful" is a program that awards community members who take exceptional pride of ownership in their properties.
Patti Bellecy is the winner in the residential category. Bellecy's garden includes flowering shrubs with rhododendrons and azaleas and colorful annuals. Each spring, her yard bursts in color. There is also a quiet retreat with a seating area, heavy plantings, a trickling waterfall and pond. Much of Ms. Bellecy's landscaping knowledge was learned from previous Bothell Beautiful winner Jane Cease.
University of Washington, Bothell's Masters in Business Administration (MBA) class is the winner in the commercial/agency category. Thirty MBA students focused their MBA Service Project on transforming and improving the home and living conditions of a needy Bothell resident. Not only did students find both financial and material support from local vendors, the students provided all physical labor and landscaped the yard by removing blackberry bushes and overgrown weeds, improved the inside of the home by replacing flooring, appliances, painted the interior, weatherized the house, replaced an unsafe walkway and completed many other tasks to enrich the life of this resident. Accepting on behalf of the MBA Service Project was Professor Karen A. Brown, University of Washington, Bothell.
