Police commend Woodinville Marine
Steven Knechtel Jr., a 1998 graduate of Woodinville High School, is a United States Marine currently stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Promoted to lance corporal in June of last year, Knechtel is assigned to the Second Marine Division as a combat load master.
While home on leave in July, he was fishing with his father and his father's best friend on the opening day of sockeye season in Lake Washington when a boat near them sank.
Knechtel was actively involved in the rescue of the fishermen in the boat and jumped into the water to cut loose one of the three victims whose foot was tangled in the fuel line.
The Seattle Police Department has recommended him for an award for his actions.
