Candidates face off in fall primary

According to state law, Washington primary elections act as the formal legal nominating process for all federal and legislative partisan offices, said King County Elections Superintendent Julie Anne Kempf.
Therefore all King County partisan races - even if there are only one or two candidates - will appear on the Sept. 17 ballot.
The primary serves to whittle the field to two candidates in all nonpartisan elections. Therefore, only nonpartisan races that have multiple candidates will appear on the primary ballot.
Rules for judicial races vary from district to district, said Kempf.
In some cases the primary is the general election. In other cases the race serves to whittle the field.
