Fire District benefit charge to be decided Nov. 19
On Tuesday, Nov. 19, Woodinville Fire & Life Safety District (WFLSD) will establish the district's benefit charge to be levied on all owners of real property within the district's 36-square-mile boundary. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 7 p.m. at the downtown fire station, 17718 Woodinville-Snohomish Road NE.
The benefit charge, though not classified as a "property tax," appears on annual property tax bills.
When voter initiatives capped the amount the fire district could collect via property taxes, WFLSD realized it wouldn't be getting enough money to run operations.
A measure granting the fire district permission to collect a benefit charge was passed in the April 24, 2001, Special Election.
According to WFLSD Fire Chief Steve Smith, the benefit charge, in addition to money received from regular tax rolls, covers expenses.
The district intended to decide the benefit charge at its Nov. 4 meeting, but Chief Smith said they had not yet received the 2003 assessed property valuations needed to calculate the fee.
