Two recycling centers, two different functions
Waste Management will have two recycling facilities within two miles of one another when the new Cascade Recycling Center, currently being constructed at 14020 NE 190th Street, Woodinville, is complete in July 2003.
The new Cascade operation will handle what Special Projects Manager for Waste Management Northwest Jerry Hardebeck calls "commodities": glass, cans, plastic, mixed waste, paper, newspaper and construction debris.
The Recycle America-Woodinville operation at 6211-234th Street SE, located in the Maltby industrial park, which currently handles commodities and yard waste, will become exclusively a yard-waste operation.
Starting sometime in August 2003, Recycle America's commodities will go to the Cascade Recycling Center.
Plans are to move the yard-waste operation undercover at the 234th Street plant, said Hardebeck.
"There are no plans to convert (the 234th Street operation) to a garbage transfer station," he said. "It was never considered."
Hardebeck is aware neighbors of the 234th Street facility successfully fought to prevent it from becoming a garbage transfer station.
"That fight took place with the previous company under different ownership, Bayside Waste Hauling and Transfer," he said.
