The dress of her dreams

by Deborah Stone
Features Writer

It was Sept. 22,  the first day of school in her senior year at Western Washington University in Bellingham, and WHS graduate (2001) Kari Brinkley was busy making the rounds to her classes, totally unaware of the top secret plans that had been made behind her back and were just now being orchestrated back at her apartment.

While Brinkley met with professors, her fiancé, John Spadafora (also a 2001 WHS grad), arrived on campus, straight from his flight from San Diego, where he is stationed in the U.S. Coast Guard as a petty officer 2nd class.

Brinkley’s roommate, in on the ruse, let Spadafora into the apartment where he prepared to surprise Brinkley. When Brinkley returned from her classes, she saw flowers on the front porch of the apartment. She says, “I knew they were probably from John, but of course I thought he had had them sent by a florist. The card said, ‘I want to spend the rest of my life with you.’ I was so touched by the message and his thoughtfulness.”
