Plumes of smoke from burning debris could be seen for miles on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12.

Multiple crews from the cities of Snohomish, Monroe and Woodinville responded to the 18800 block of Yew Way near Maltby for a large fire at the United Recycling and Container Plant.

A pile of scrap metal estimated as 50 by about 200 feet caught fire, according to Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue. Metal debris such as washers and refrigerators were on fire.

People in the area reported seeing dark smoke and smelling the fumes from the fire. Fire officials said people living nearby could smell it for a few miles. However, there was no threat to the community.

People who live near or downwind of the fire were asked to close their doors and windows to avoid breathing in the smoke.

Crews used water tenders to fight the fire due to a lack of hydrants in the area.

The scrap metal yard is believed to be the same place where a fire ignited back in mid-June. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

There were no injuries or evacuations.
