Longtime Duvall resident and former city clerk Gloria Judd died Jan. 11 of natural causes at a Redmond adult family home. She was 79.
Mrs. Judd was born Gloria Fae Hartenstine on Feb. 16, 1941, in Outlook, Yakima County, the only child of Edith Lucille (Cromar) and Myron Hartenstine. She grew up in Moses Lake, Grant County, and was an active member of the Evangelical Methodist Church. She graduated from Warden High School in 1959.
As a teenager on a church hay ride, Gloria met her future husband, Ronald Lewis Judd, the eldest son of her church pastor, the Rev. Lloyd Judd.
The couple was married on June 5, 1959, in Moses Lake. Gloria saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time on their honeymoon to the Oregon Coast.
They initially lived in Moses Lake, where Ronald began what would become a long career working as a machinist for the Boeing Company. The couple then relocated to Duvall in 1960, following the Rev. Judd’s transfer to the Duvall Evangelical Methodist Church.
They spent the bulk of their lives in Duvall, settling on Broadway Avenue Northeast, where they raised three children and remained active in community affairs.
Mrs. Judd served as a deputy clerk and later City Clerk/Treasurer for what then was the small City of Duvall – a 30-year career that included a mayoral term of her father-in-law, Rev. Judd.
Mrs. Judd was known for her friendly nature, a healthy sense of humor, and devotion to friends, family, her church and civic community. She enjoyed annual summer camping trips on the Olympic Peninsula with her family, even though she always wondered why it wasn’t easier to just stay home where there were lights and beds.
In her retirement, she enjoyed shopping on QVC, tracking her kids’ updates, reading and sharing her son’s Seattle Times articles, and keeping track of events large and small in Duvall.
Following her husband’s 2011 death, Mrs. Judd moved in 2014 to a retirement community in Woodinville with her much loved kitty as a roommate. She lived there until spring, 2019, when she relocated to Redmond’s Heart Adult Family Home, where she spent her last years.
She is survived by two daughters, Janice (husband Steve) Ohlsen of Duvall and Linda (husband Mike) Ranz of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; and a son, Ronald Charles (wife Meri-Jo) Judd of Bellingham.
Interment will be at Novelty Cemetery following a family graveside service.
