There’s no better time to try something new than on the first day of the year.

The Friends of Sammamish Lake Park are hosting a Polar Plunge to kick off the new year on Saturday, Jan 1. According to a news release from the organization, the event will start at 10:30 a.m. at Sunset Beach in Issaquah, Wash.

The first day of the year is also designated as a “free day” at Washington State Parks, so having a Discover Pass isn’t required for the plunge.

The shore will fill with music and holiday cheer before the crowd takes the plunge at 11 a.m. The first 180 to register will win a souvenir mug, hand warmers and a coupon for a cup of Ivar’s clam chowder.

Friends, families or colleagues can attend as a team or individually, the release notes. People who prefer to stay warm and dry are encouraged to cheer on the group as they leap into the freezing water. Costumes are also highly encouraged.

For those unable to attend, people can participate virtually by hopping in a shower, hot tub or pool. According to the release, those interested can send photos to director@flssp.org and can pick up their prizes at the state park office by Jan. 10.

Upon entrance, a $10 minimum fee will benefit the Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park. The nonprofit works to support, promote and enhance the park as well as restore habitats and fund capital projects for improvements, states the release.
