After a yearlong hiatus due to pandemic cancellations and rescheduling, the Woodinville High School fastpitch team is finally able to break in the newly resurfaced field.

The brief 10-game season will feature three weeks with three games each week against other Northshore School District teams. The tenth game will serve as a playoff to determine the top competitor.

Having not played a game since 2019, the Falcon fastpitch team is fresh and new.

“We've got good experience and a lot of power, so I'm excited to see that come to fruition,” head coach Dani Tachell said.

Tachell said the team this year is even across the board with three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and a few standout freshmen. Three seniors graduated last year without a final season due to the pandemic.

Senior pitcher Alex Nyberg, who is committed to play next year at California Lutheran University, will be the heart of Woodinville’s lineup. According to Tachell, the veteran pitcher hits just as well as she throws the ball.

Nyberg combined with junior Taylor Fitch are going to be a really tough twosome to pitch through, she said. Senior Brooke Tilson is also back on the lineup alongside senior Natalie Kirstein. Tilson plans to play at Pacific Lutheran University next year, whereas Kirstein will be heading to St. Olaf College in Minnesota.

“I’m excited to see what they can do with one last season,” Tachell said of her seniors.

Aside from the returning seniors, Tachell is looking forward to getting to know a young team. With the yearlong interruption, she noted, it’s a brand-new team in some aspects.

“This year is different,” she said. “It's not going to be the same starting nine rotation. It's not like we get to go chase the state championship.”

Tachell said this season will be an interesting balance between getting everyone time to play and creating a winning team, especially since the players missed out on last season.

The first game of the season took place against Bothell High School, and results were not available by press time. The team will play Bothell again in a double header on Friday, May 21.
